Around 200 years ago, Bhavani’s handloom weaving community pioneered a new craft - creating a carpet-like material using coarse, thick threads in striking multicolor patterns. This creation became known as the Bhavani Jamakkalam.
The craft soon gained immense popularity, gradually replacing traditional saree weaving in many households. In recognition of its cultural and regional uniqueness, the Government of India awarded the Bhavani Jamakkalam a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag in 2005–06.
Its excellence has been celebrated for centuries — as early as 1883, Bhavani Jamakkalams won first prize at the Madras Fair, documented in the Coimbatore District Manual (1887).
